Resources

Because we love cats, we like to ensure we continuously educate ourselves about what's best for them.  As cat owners ourselves, and because cats don't speak the same language as us, we understand that it can sometimes be difficult to know what, and how to provide the best care to ensure they are happy and healthy. - And because we know you care about your own cats just as much as we do, we thought it might be a good idea to share some useful resources with you.  Below you will find a list of web based resources which we have found useful, and maybe you will too.

We also love all the funny things cats can do, so in amongst our more "educational" resource links, don't be surprised to find one or two less serious resource links.

We will continue to update this list periodically.

SPCA

We are pretty sure all cat owners must know about the SPCA.  Many of our guests are SPCA rescue cats themselves.  SPCA New Zealand is a charity that helps protect animals who are sick, injured, lost, abused or simply abandoned. Every year, their 46 SPCA Centres across the country receive 60,000 animals through their doors and 14,000 animal welfare complaints.  Their mission is "To advance the welfare of all animals in New Zealand by preventing cruelty to animals; alleviating suffering of animals and promoting their policies through education and advocacy.  Click the logo on the left to go straight to their website.

International Cat Care

A UK charity whose aim is "To engage, educate and empower people throughout the world to improve the health and welfare of cats by sharing advice, training and passion."  Their website is a great source of all things related to providing the best care for your cat.  You can also subsribe for free to their "Intelligent Cat Care" magazine / newsletter.  Click on the logo on the left to go straight to their website.

Cats Protection

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity. Their vision is "a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. It’s an ambitious vision. However, we truly believe it can be achieved because of our passion, our professional approach and simply because cats are among the UK’s most popular companion pets. Cats Protection has simple and clear objectives to help cats:  Homing - Finding good homes for cats in need;  Neutering - Supporting and encouraging the neutering of cats;  Information - Improving people’s understanding of cats and their care".  Their website is a great source of reference material, and they have a series of "Cat Care Essential Guides" covering issues such as understanding and managing cat behaviour, moving house, and more.  Although this is a UK based organisation and their information is heavily UK referenced, it's still a great resource.

CatTime.com

"The place for all things feline". CatTime state that their mission is to "keep cats out of shelters and get them adopted by good homes by providing novice and experienced owners alike with the important information needed to make them, and their cats, very happy.  CatTime covers all things cat. Our extensive breed profiles include the evaluation and history of key cat characteristics - amount of shedding, adaptability, behaviors - and what they mean for a potential owner."  The site also has a broad range of cat topics which range from educational to inspirational and humorous.

Simon's Cat

If you havn't seen Simon's Cat, then you should definitely click the logo on the left.  According to Wikipedia, "Simon's Cat is an animated cartoon and book series by the British animator Simon Tofield featuring a hungry house cat who uses increasingly heavy-handed tactics to get his owner to feed him."  According to the official website, "Simon’s Cat is a charming, yet mischievous cat that lives with his long suffering owner – Simon. He made his first appearance online, in a film called Cat Man Do, made by animator and illustrator, Simon Tofield. Since then he has appeared in  books, games and comic strips.  Simon is an English animator, who has a great interest in British wildlife, painting, the great outdoors and of course cats.  Simon started animating at a very young age. Inspired by cartoons on TV, he used to create basic flip-books in an attempt to emulate the techniques he saw being used on screen. You can find out more about how he created Simon’s Cat in his film – The Simon’s Cat Story." - However you choose to describe Simon's Cat, we are sure he will bring a smile to your face.

Calvin & Hobbes

We realise that whilst Hobbes might be a tiger, and a stuffed toy tiger at that, he's still technically a "cat".  And whilst this comic strip isn't specifically about cat related issues, it still makes us smile.  According to wikipedia, "Calvin and Hobbes is a daily comic strip by American cartoonist Bill Watterson that was syndicated from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995... Calvin and Hobbes follows the humorous antics of Calvin, a precocious, mischievous, and adventurous six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his sardonic stuffed tiger. The pair is named after John Calvin, a 16th-century French Reformation theologian, and Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century English political philosopher.[4][5] Set in the contemporary, suburban United States, the strip depicts Calvin's frequent flights of fancy and his friendship with Hobbes. It also examines Calvin's relationships with family and classmates, especially the love/hate relationship between him and his classmate, Susie Derkins. Hobbes' dual nature is a defining motif for the strip: to Calvin, Hobbes is a live anthropomorphic tiger; all the other characters see Hobbes as an inanimate stuffed toy. Though the series does not mention specific political figures or current events, it does explore broad issues like environmentalism, public education, philosophical quandaries, and the flaws of opinion polls." - You can see more about Calvin & Hobbes on their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CalvinAndHobbes/) or read the daily comic at: http://bit.ly/calvinandhobbesdaily
